SHOWING WITHOUT GOING

Connections

Approaches

A SWG process or performance may use Mobile Apps as a tool, for example

- In performance, for communication between performers/makers/those onstage, especially with performers in separate spaces/ different countries.

- In performance, between performers and audience members or between audience members.

- During the process, in exercises like 'under-reading', apps like Zello allow you to create many groups to communicate with each other through a walkie-talkie type system.

There are many different apps with different ways to engage from communication tools, to voting and polling systems and interactive gameplay. There are even instances in which you may code an app for a specific show as a specific tool unique to the experience you want to give/ engage with.

Approaches

Use of instructional material in the form of text, audio or visual guides to create a performance event where unrehearsed people perform the work. This can be done through various constellations of participation, eg. involving a solo audience creating a performance for itself, two audience members creating a performance for each other, a group involving collective participation, etc.

The unrehearsed performers can also be specifically invited or 'cast' individuals who perform in front of a conventional audience (the audience may or may not know the performers are unrehearsed.)

It can also be combined with rehearsed, predictable, or fixed elements (actors, the sunset, hungry birds, recorded material, etc).
